Start with how you use the room
Before choosing tiles and taps, decide what is essential day to day: a bath, walk-in shower, easy-clean surfaces, accessible storage or better movement around the room.
Measure and photograph the existing space
Record the length, width, window positions and location of the toilet, basin and shower or bath. Photos of corners and pipework access are useful when asking for advice.
Consider plumbing and ventilation early
Moving existing fixtures may change the scope of pipework and drainage. Check whether existing extract ventilation and water pressure are appropriate for what you want to install.
Set priorities before choosing finishes
Separate must-have improvements from optional extras. Flooring, waterproofing, shower screens, lighting and joinery can all affect the full scope.
Ask what a quotation includes
Clarify whether the price includes removal of existing fittings, preparation of surfaces, plumbing alterations, installation, finishing and waste arrangements.
Talk through the living arrangements
If the property has only one bathroom, ask how planned works may affect toilet and washing access while the job is under way.
